Capital Soccer Classic
Presented by Johnson & Johnson
Wednesday April 24, 2013
On April 24th, the U.S. Soccer Foundation hosted the inaugural Capital Soccer Classic, a family-friendly charity event benefiting Soccer for Success – our award-winning program that provides youth in urban underserved communities with a free, safe place to play. The event, which was created in partnership with POLITICO and presented by Johnson & Johnson, was held at Gallaudet University’s Hotchkiss Field in Washington, D.C.
The event kicked-off with a free youth soccer clinic, which provided more than 100 local children with the opportunity to improve their skills with help from members of D.C. United and the Washington Spirit. The youth clinic was followed by a series of small-sided adult games, which allowed participants to showcase their abilities and play alongside soccer greats like Cobi Jones and Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak.
The night culminated with the Congressional Soccer match – a friendly competition featuring Members of Congress, celebrities, and some of the greatest U.S. players and coaches in history. In addition to Jones and Sahaydak, former National Team players John Harkes, Eddie Pope, Claudio Reyna, and Juergen Sommer all took the field in support of Soccer for Success; Jurgen Klinsmann, Head Coach of the U.S. Men's National Team, helped celebrate the event by speaking on behalf of U.S. Soccer. Members of Congress in attendance included Rep. Mike McIntyre, Rep. Luke Messer, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, Rep. Dave Reichert, Rep. Eric Swalwell, Rep. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Todd Young. They were joined by Mike Allen of POLITICO, Major Garret of CBS, and Eamon Javers of CNBC.
Following an impressive goal from Cobi Jones in the final seconds of regulation play, the game ended in a 6-6 tie. After two nail-biting rounds of penalty kicks, the Gray team defeated the Gold team 7-6 to take home the victory in the first-ever Capital Soccer Classic.
