SOCCER IS A POWERFUL VEHICLE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE While almost everyone understands the fun side of soccer, it is easy to overlook the serious role it can play in the lives of children. In many neighborhoods, soccer is the only safe haven for a child until a single parent returns home from work. Soccer is a connection to mentors who help with homework and provide encouragement. Soccer is access to programming that promotes education, leadership and positive alternatives to drugs, crime and other at-risk behaviors. Soccer is a powerful vehicle for youth development and social change. The U.S. Soccer Foundation supports programs and projects that use the game to improve the health and well-being of children in urban economically disadvantaged areas. Most recently, we launched the “Soccer for Success” after school program in Houston, TX. Supported by the local School District, Parks & Recreation Department, and the Houston Dynamo, “Soccer for Success” engages 3rd through 8th grade students in fun, supervised programming that teaches soccer fundamentals, builds life skills, and promotes healthy lifestyles. The program will reach over 1,500 children in vulnerable Houston neighborhoods. The Foundation is working to bring the “Soccer for Success” model to economically disadvantaged communities nationwide, but we need your help. Your donation will provide a child with the opportunity to play and experience the many benefits of this powerful game. The change we want to see begins with each of us. How will you make a difference? |
