U.S. Soccer Foundation's "Soccer for Success" Program Receives Prestigious 2011 Social Innovation Fund Award

Washington, D.C., August 4, 2011 – The Corporation for National and Community Service announced today that the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, has been awarded a $2 million grant over two years from the 2011 Social Innovation Fund to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce obesity rates among at-risk youth in urban communities.

    Field Added to Rapidly Growing List of Cities Served By Soccer for Success in 2012

    May 9, 2012, Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, and KIPP DC, grant recipient of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Annual Grants program, will hold an event to celebrate the grand opening of newly renovated Bundy Athletic Field. The latest field-building project in the District marks another milestone in the national expansion of the Soccer for Success program developed and run by the Foundation. At present, hundreds of children participate in Soccer for Success at 14 sites throughout the District. On a national level, the Foundation currently serves 8,000 children in eight cities with expansion plans to serve 15,000 children in 18 cities.

    April 13, 2012, Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, will host the 6th annual Urban Soccer Symposium at the Georgetown University Hotel & Conference Center on April 16-19, 2012.

    The Urban Soccer Symposium hosts soccer programmers and speakers from around the nation who are dedicated to improving the field of sports-based youth development. Sessions and workshops at the Symposium will focus on character development, gang-related issues, positive coaching techniques and how to use soccer as a tool to promote healthy living within families.

    The Claudio Reyna Foundation, Soccer Shots and The U.S. Soccer Foundation will host an event to celebrate the grand opening of the new Sport Court at BRICK Avon Academy. Through the fundraising efforts of Soccer Shots, children at BRICK Avon Academy will have a place to learn the sport of soccer and participate in the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success program, in partnership with the Claudio Reyna Foundation. Soccer for Success is an after-school youth development program that provides children with a safe place to engage in physical activity, mentorship and nutrition education during the times when they are the most vulnerable to succumb to negative influences.

  • U.S. Soccer Foundation Teams Up with the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation
    and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta

    Groups Align to Bring Free Soccer Programming to Children in Underserved Areas of Atlanta

    April 10, 2012, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, and the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, a division of The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, have teamed up to provide free soccer programming to children in the metro Atlanta area. The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation will donate $250,000, over a period of five years, to the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success after-school youth development program. The program, which will be operated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGMCA), will provide nearly 700 participants with 90 minutes of exercise, three days per week for 24 weeks.

    Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, announced the appointment of Charles Marshall as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Kevin Payne, Charles “Cully” Stimson, and David Sutphen were also elected as officers, at the Board’s March meeting.

  • U.S. Soccer Foundation and D.C. United Women at the 2012 NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo

    January 14 – 15, 2012 proved to be a busy weekend for the Foundation as over 85,000 people poured into the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. for the 2012 NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo. For the duration of the Expo, the Foundation teamed up with D.C. United Women to run continuous 4 vs. 4 soccer games for children who were in attendance. Aside from providing children with fun physical activity and exposing them to the benefits of soccer, the Foundation sought to spread the message of using soccer as a tool in the fight against childhood obesity.

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation, with the support of D.C. United Women, will set up an interactive area at the NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo to get children active using the sport of soccer. At the Expo, children will have the opportunity to play soccer, meet players from the D.C. United Women’s team, participate in arts and crafts and enter a raffle to win a special prize from the Foundation.

  • U.S. Soccer Foundation Soccer for Success SIF Sub-grant Now Available

    The 2011 Social Innovation Fund (SIF) awarded the U.S. Soccer Foundation a $2 million grant over two years to use towards programs that promote healthy lifestyles and reduce childhood obesity rates. Working as an intermediary for SIF, the Foundation seeks non-profit, community based organizations to implement its Soccer for Success program. Soccer for Success is a sports-based youth development after-school program that uses soccer as a tool in the national fight against childhood obesity and as a vehicle to connect children to positive adult role models. The 2012 SIF Sub-grants will support the replication and expansion of Soccer for Success. Grant amounts will range from $100,000 to $300,000 and the awarded amount will be funded for two years, provided applicants successfully meet program requirements. Organizations must provide a dollar for dollar cash match for all awarded funds.

  • U.S. Soccer Foundation Names University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala to Board of Directors & Re-elects Officers

    Washington, D.C., February 17, 2011 - The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, announced today the addition of Donna E. Shalala to its Board of Directors. Shalala is President of the University of Miami and has more than 25 years of experience as an accomplished scholar, teacher and administrator. She is a Director of Gannett Co., Inc., the Lennar Corporation, and Mednax, Inc. In 1993 President Clinton appointed her U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) where she served for eight years, becoming the longest serving HHS Secretary in U.S. history. In June 2008, President Bush presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. Shalala also serves as an Independent Director on U.S. Soccer's Board of Directors.

    Washington, D.C. January 14, 2011 – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, announced today that it awarded 63 grants totaling $2.5 million to non-profit organizations serving youth in 30 states.

    The 2011 grant awards reflect the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s focus on improving the health and well being of children in underserved communities. The awards will support programming, coaching and equipment for players and the construction of safe playing fields that will facilitate the continued growth of soccer in the United States.

    In celebration of Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day on Saturday, September 25, 2010, the U.S. Soccer Foundation will honor the Special Olympics founder with a field dedication at Friendship Southeast Academy Charter School – Mini-Pitch Soccer Field in Washington, D.C. The field dedication will also include a soccer clinic for 40 youth players and a Unified Game featuring Special Olympics athletes and coaches from united Soccer Club to play and enjoy a day of soccer. On hand for the event will be DC United midfielder, Brandon Barklage.

    In keeping with MTV Tr3s’ continued commitment of partnering with socially responsible initiatives that benefit the Latino community, the U.S. Soccer Foundation was named the Official Charity of “ROCK N’ GOL.”

    MTV Tr3s will join the World Cup fever by airing “ROCK N’ GOL” – a celebrity soccer game featuring leading Latino entertainers and renowned soccer players on June 3rd at 9:00 pm (EST). Four different teams comprised of celebrities including Michelle Rodriguez, Akon, Pitbull, Jess Garcia, Carlos Mencia, David Bisbal, Walter Perez, Debi Nova, and Jenni Rivera were teamed up with soccer stars Marcelo Balboa, Brandi Chastain, Tony Meola, and Tab Ramos for a two hour competition that blended traditional soccer into a 4x4 tournament.

    The five day event held at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH and sponsored by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, welcomed youths ages 14-18 to recognize their potential leadership qualities on and off the soccer field and provide them with the tools and information they need to continue developing their leadership skills.

The donation comes in recognition of Chicago Fire midfielder, Logan Pause, who was honored last year as a U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year.

    The equipment donation of 6 Pop-Up Goals, 3 Ball Bags and 24 Soccer Balls from Kwik Goal, as well as 100 adidas backpacks, will be made at a World Cup Celebration hosted by Urban Initiatives and Logan Pause on May 21st.

    MVP Health Care was looking to add something special to their summer KidPower Soccer Series last year to teach children about the importance of giving back while they learned about healthy lifestyles from one of the best in the game, Abby Wambach. The U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Passback Program proved to be the perfect fit and soon there were Passback equipment collections at each event.

    If you’re wondering if Matthew Boden is a soccer fan, look no further than his dog. His name is Pelé. At age 13, Matthew is an eighth grader at Westland Middle School in Bethesda, MD and an active soccer player. When he’s not cheering for his beloved Philadelphia Eagles, playing tennis, or watching ESPN, he is most likely competing with his friends on the MSI Soccer Classic team, the Firebolts.

    However, just playing wasn’t enough. Matthew had a stronger commitment to the game he loves, and that passion took shape in a philanthropic mission that is commendable for any person, much less an eighth grader.

  • Soccer for Social Change: 4th Annual Urban Soccer Symposium presented by U.S. Soccer Foundation & the Urban Soccer Collaborative Promotes Healthy Lifestyles through Soccer

    Washington, D.C., April 28, 2010 – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, and the Urban Soccer Collaborative, hosted 73 individuals representing nearly 50 different organizations committed to using soccer for social change at the fourth Annual Urban Soccer Symposium held in Washington, DC on April 21-23.

    This national event was designed to help develop new programs and strengthen existing organizations committed to using soccer as a tool for positive youth development in under-resourced communities. The core theme throughout the three day event was how soccer can be used to promote healthy lifestyles, thus recognizing the important role soccer plays in the nation’s fight against childhood obesity.

  • What was once a rundown asphalt playground in the center of Harlem is now home to an oasis of green where youth soccer players from FC Harlem and local organizations can play the game they love.

    On April 9, 2010 the U.S. Soccer Foundation joined Irv Smalls, Executive Director of FC Harlem, Major League Soccer, The Children’s Aid Society, FieldTurf, and local politicians for the grand opening of a synthetic-turf soccer field in downtown Harlem.

  • The U.S. Soccer Foundation developed a Mini-Pitch Program that converts small, vacant spaces into fields. Read how one grantee uses the program to keep kids safe on and off the streets.

    After finishing their field - one grantee uses diverse programming to keep children involved. “One of our older participants just graduated high school this year,” began Jason Longshore, Communications Director of Soccer in the Streets. Jason knows the young man has beaten the odds. He explains, “A close childhood friend of his is in jail because of gang activity and the quote that always sticks with me is, ‘If we had kept our soccer team together playing, he wouldn't have been wasting his time with those guys.’”

  • Passback from the Pros: All MLS and WPS soccer teams allocate at least one day in their busy schedules to participate in the Passback Program, but this year, two squads stood above the rest: the LA Galaxy (MLS) and the Chicago Red Stars (WPS).

    The Galaxy collected 4,185 pieces of equipment, while the Red Stars amassed 1,000 pieces of gear – both totals were the most in the teams’ respective leagues.

  • “Over the last four years, Project GOAL has completely changed my life around and made a difference,” said Miguel Lara, a sophomore at Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.

    “A combination of academics and passion for soccer at Project GOAL are important things to the administration,” said Miguel. “The intelligent teachers strive to make sure the students excel in all of their classes and progress throughout the year. Maintaining good grades and positive conduct are keys to being successful with the program.”

    With a Program Grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation, Project GOAL was able to deflect some of its biggest costs, and as a result, allow more kids to benefit from the organization.

  • Tim McKenna, Warren, OH
    Tim McKenna, a now retired member of the United States Air Force, was deployed in Comayagua, Honduras in 2004 and observed that the children and families of the neighborhood had very little in their poverty-stricken region.

    “These families had nothing,” said McKenna, a West Virginia native who currently resides in Warren, Ohio. “The kids might have gotten one set of new clothes a year, but there was no hope in sight for many of them.”

  • From player to coach: How one youth gained confidence through soccer, and how he now shares his enthusiasm for the game to impact the lives of others.

    “As a coach, showing them the fun part of soccer is the most important because it gets their interest in the game,” said 17-year-old Jerome Reano. The teen is a member of the Santo Domingo Pueblo tribe in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has been playing soccer throughout the majority of his life. More recently, however, Reano has transitioned from player to coach, as well as referee.
