In 2007, the Foundation brought together a handful of leaders running successful soccer programs in urban communities. The goal was to better understand their needs as the Foundation focused its efforts on serving children in economically disadvantaged urban communities. The result was formation of the Urban Soccer Collaborative, which today has 50 member organizations – from small community based non-profits to large state associations – reaching 25,000 children in underserved communities nationwide. The Foundation partners with the Collaborative on youth development initiatives with a core focus on using soccer as a tool for teaching life skills and how to live healthy and active lifestyles. Through our partnership with the Collaborative we work with leaders of grassroots programs to develop standards and best practices for running effective urban programs.
