Overview
The Urban Soccer Symposium is a 4-day event filled with interactive workshops to help develop and strengthen programs that use soccer for social change. The Urban Soccer Symposium is the only national event that provides resources, trainings, information, and networking opportunities specifically designed for soccer programs in under-resourced communities.

Featured Speakers

Monica Gonzalez - ESPN Analyst & Former Member of the Mexico Women's National Team
Monica Gonzalez is the founder of Gonzo Soccer and Leadership Academy, a nonprofit organization that targets girls from underserved areas of Chicago, Houston, and Tijuana, providing soccer and life skills training to improve health and fitness, boost academic standing, and foster personal development. Ms. Gonzalez was an All-American soccer player at the University of Notre Dame before being drafted as the #11 overall pick by the Boston Breakers of the WUSA in 2002. She was a member of the Mexico Women’s National Soccer Team, serving as captain from 2003 through 2007, and participated in the 1999 World Cup and the 2004 Olympic Games. She is currently an analyst and sideline reporter for ESPN and serves as a member of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Youth Advisory Panel.

Juergen Griesbeck - Founder & CEO, streetfootballworld
Griesbeck has dedicated his life to examining the roles of football in societal transformation and as a tool for positive social change. He started Football for Peace in Medellin, Colombia, which brought thousands of local youth together in troubled areas of the city. Bringing this concept back to his native Germany, he founded Football for Tolerance. Griesbeck’s efforts to unite and foster change through football led him to establish the streetfootballworld network in 2004.
Angela Hucles - Olympic Gold Medalist & Member of the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Players' Advisory Council
Angela Hucles is a former member of the U.S. Women’s National Team; she appeared in 109 matches for the United States, earned gold medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, and played in the 2007 Women’s World Cup. Angela graduated from the University of Virginia as their all-time leading goal scorer and leader in points and was drafted by the Boston Breakers. Off the field, Angela has dedicated her time to community service that positively impacts women and children by focusing on life skill enhancement, education, and empowerment through sports. She was named the U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year in 2009 and serves as a member of the Foundation’s Players’ Advisory Council.

Sam Kass – Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives, White House
Sam Kass is Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives at the White House. In his role as Senior Policy Advisor, he advises the Let’s Move! initiative on food policy issues and overall program strategy. Sam has had a long interest in sustainable and nutritious ingredients and helped First Lady Michelle Obama create the first large scale vegetable garden at the White House since the 1890’s.

Dr. Auma Obama – Sports for Social Change Initiative Program Technical Advisor, CARE USA
Dr. Auma Obama is CARE USA’s Sports for Social Change Initiative (SSCI) Program Technical Advisor. She advises on and coordinates all activities related to the SSCI, including the development of the Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN), a global initiative to promote sport as a tool for social change, particularly among female youth. Dr. Obama is an Ambassador for Beyond Sport and a member of Comic Relief’s Sport for Change Advisory Group. In addition, she is the Founder of the Sauti Kuu Foundation, which aims to improve the prospects of disadvantaged children and young people by going beyond sport to support youth innovation and participation in the development of sustainable communities.
